Garbine Muguruza has become the new women’s number one player in the world, attaining the top ranking for the first time in her career. Fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal retains his number one ranking in the men’s tennis.
Muguruza might not have had a great end to her majors this year after she was knocked out in just the fourth round of the US Open by Petra Kvitova but attained the ranking after the likes of Simona Halep and previous number one Karolina Pliskova also did not manage to go the distance.
Having started the competition ranked third in the world, Muguruza rose to the top spot after making the fourth round after having been knocked out in just the second round of the competition last year. What also has helped is her triumph at the Wimbledon earlier this year, as opposed to another second round exit in 2016.

One of the biggest movers on the WTA ranking charts was Sloane Stephens who went on to win the US Open by beating Madison Keys in the final. She was 83rd in the world before the tournament started and has now moved up to 17th in the WTA rankings.
Some of the others in the top ten include Halep who stays at second, Elina Svitolina, now third, Pliskova, who is now ranked fourth and Venus Williams who has climbed up to fifth – her first top-five showing since 2011.
The men’s singles rankings are a throwback to a few years ago with US Open winner Nadal retaining his top spot while Federer has now jumped one spot to become the second-ranked player.

Federer, who lost in the US Open quarter-finals to Juan Martin del Potro, takes up the second position from Andy Murray, who has now fallen to third after missing out on the competition.
Alexander Zverev is the new number four ranked player in the world, while Marin Cilic has jumped two spots to become fifth.
Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori missed the tournament because of injury issues and have slid down the pecking order as well; Djokovic is sixth, Wawrinka’s fallen four spots to eight while Nishikori is now 14th in the world.
