Novak Djokovic will kick-start the 2018 Qatar Open as the defending champion, having promised to be back early in the year after having skipped most part of the second half of the competition.
Djokovic had overcome Andy Murray in the final of the 2017 edition, winning the match in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to exhibit continuing form from the previous year. Unfortunately for him, things went pear-shaped soon after that and injuries ensured his season was finished after the 2017 Wimbledon.
That being said, Djokovic managed a fighting title victory during the Qatar Open last year, having also needed to overcome Fernando Verdasco in a gruelling semi-final.
The Spaniard Verdasco had five match-points to close out the encounter in the second tie-breaker but a gritty Djokovic held on to win that set and then the next to make it to the final.
Murray was on a 28-match winning streak going into the final last year but his loss to Djokovic ended that.
Some of the other top-notch players who had participated in the 2017 edition of the Qatar Open are Tomas Berdych, who bowed out to Murray in the semi-final, David Goffin, who was a second round casualty, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Ivo Karlovic, both of whom fell in the quarter-finals, and Philipp Kohlschreiber and Marcos Baghdatis.
It will be interesting to see which of these players make it to the 2018 edition of the Qatar Open with the presence of Djokovic and Murray almost guaranteeing heavy ticket sales.
