What Happened at the 2019 Brasil Open?

Guido Pella, seeded third in the competition, won the Brasil Open 2019 title by beating Christian Garin in straight sets in the final. This was Pella’s first ever title at the ATP Circuit. He had earlier needed two tie-breakers in the semifinals to overcome Laslo Djere, while Garin defeated Casper Ruud in the other semifinal.

None of the other seeded players made it to the semis, while the only other player to make it to the quarterfinal as a seed was the fourth seeded Leonardo Mayer, who lost to Garin in three sets. Defending champion Fabio Fognini opted not to participate in the tournament.

The competition started with Albert Ramos Vinolas as the top seed, along with Pablo Cuevas, Gael Monfils, and Fabio Fognini. The top eight seeds also featured three Argentinean players – Leonardo Mayer, Guido Pella, and Federico Delbonis.

The top four seeds enjoyed a bye into the second round among which, Monfils and Vinolas failed to move past the quarterfinal. As for Cuevas and Foginini, their paths crossed in the semifinal with Foginini coming out on the top with straight sets.

In the other half, a storm was brewing in the form of Nicolas Jarry, who quickly dispatched the likes of Pella and Vinolas. He emerged as the victor in the semifinal as well and managed to set up a final clash with Fognini. This time around, however, the adamant Jarry was halted by a dominating Fognini.

In three sets, Fabio won the match and lifted his first title of the 2018 ATP season.
