What Happened at the 2022 Indian Wells Open?

The 2020 edition of Indian Wells Open wasn’t held because of the pandemic.

Dominic Thiem won the men’s singles title at the Indian Wells Masters in 2019 while the women’s singles title was won by wild-card entrant Andreescu Bianca. It was the start of a brilliant run for Bianca, who went on to win the US Open title later in the year.

Thiem, seeded seventh in the tournament, beat Roger Federer in the final in three sets. Down a set, he stormed back to register a fighting victory, having had it easy for most part till the quarter-final. In the last four stage, Thiem needed three sets, two of them that went to tie-breaks, to defeat Milos Raonic.

Federer didn’t drop a set on his way to reaching the final, but was aided by Rafael Nadal’s injury and withdrawal from their semifinal. Top seeded Novak Djokovic was a shock loser in the third round to Philipp Kohlschreiber.

In the women’s singles draw, Andreescu overcame a battling match for the title against Angelique Kerber to clinch a big win. Having gone into the tournament as an unseeded wildcard, the Canadian was deserved winner, having to beat Dominika Cibulkova, Wang Qiang, Garbine Muguruza and Elina Svitolina to reach the final.

The top two seeds, Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep reached the fourth round before bowing out, while Serena Williams retired from her third round encounter against Muguruza.

In 2018, del Potro defeated defending champion Roger Federer in the men’s singles final, in an encounter that went right down to the wire. Sixth seeded in the tournament, the Argentine did not face too many issues before entering the final – there was one three-setter against Germany Philipp Kohlschreiber – but in the title-decider, Federer fought like he is known to fight.

After losing the first set, Federer came back in the second to win it in a hard-fought tie-breaker that lasted 18 points. However, del Potro returned the favour in the third set that also went into a tie-breaker by winning it 7-2 to clinch the title.

Borna Coric and Milos Raonic were the other semi-finalists, losing to Federer and del Potro respectively, but the season looked to be going awry for Djokovic, seeded 10th, who was shocked by Taro Daniel, a Japanese qualifier.

Interestingly, the seeds second to fifth, Marin Cilic, Grigor Dimitrov, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem, all failed to make it to the men’s singles quarter-finals.

In the women’s singles draw, Osaka showed why she would go on to win the US Open title later in the year when she steamrolled most of the top players in action in the tournament. She defeated the likes of Maria Sharapova (round one), Agnieszka Radwanska (round two), Karolina Pliskova (quarter-finals) and Simona Halep (semi-finals) to join Daria Kasatkina in the final.

Kasatkina also had her moments in the tournament as she sent Caroline Wozniacki, the second seed packing before defeating the 2018 Wimbledon champion and 10th seeded Angelique Kerber and eighth seeded Venus Williams in the next few matches.

However, in the final, Kasatkina was no match to the power of Osaka who brushed her aside in straight sets to win the title.
