What Happened at the 2022 Rome Masters?

The 2022 Italian Open men’s singles competition was won by Novak Djokovic. It was his sixth competition win and he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final and in doing so regained his world number one spot on the men’s rankings.

The women’s singles title was won by Iga Swiatek who successfully defended her title she had won in 2021. Swiatek defeated Ons Jabeur 6-2, 6-2 in the title-decider of the 2022 edition.

Novak Djokovic won his fifth title in Rome in 2020 while Rafael Nadal collected his 10th at the competition in 2021. While Djokovic defeated Diego Schwartzman in the final it was the Serb himself who went down to Nadal in 2021.

Swiatek had demolished Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-0 in the 2021 edition final while it was Simona Halep who had won the 2020 women’s singles tournament in Rome by overcoming Pliskova again.

Rafael Nadal and Karolina Pliskova won the 2019 men’s singles and women’s singles respectively. Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic in the final in three sets, while Pliskova brushed aside Great Britain’s Johanna Konta to pouch the title.

That made it Nadal’s ninth title at the Italian Open and second in a row while the two-time women’s singles defending champion Elina Svitolina was knocked out in the second round.
