The Maharashtra Open will be used as a tune-up event to the season’s first Grand Slam, the Australian Open as players look to return to tennis and warm up for the major.

It replaced the Chennai Open, as the sole event in India to be a part of the ATP series. The total number of points up for grab is 250.

Since the inception of the original tournament in 1996, this tournament has been called by multiple names including the McDowell Open, Gold Flake Open, Tata Open, Chennai Open, Aircel Chennai Open and now in its present avatar, the Maharashtra Open.

The competition was not organised in 2021 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and a scheduling clash with the Australian Open but returned in 2022 when it was played in February.

But after the ATP cancelled their contract with the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association owing to sponsorship reasons before the 2018 edition, the lovely city of Pune has now got the chance to host the exciting, star-studded event and at TennisWorldLive.com, we will look to cover it for you.

2023 ATP Maharashtra Open Schedule & Dates

The Tata Open Maharashtra will commence on Monday, January 2, and will end on Sunday, January 8 with the men’s singles final. The qualifying matches will be played over a couple of days before the tournament begins.

What Happened at the 2022 ATP Pune Open?

Unseeded Joao Sousa overcame the sixth seeded Emil Ruusuvuori in a gruelling three-setter to win the 2022 edition of the Pune Open.

Sousa had earlier defeated Elias Ymer while Ruusuvuori beat Kamil Majchrzak in the two semifinals to enter the title-decider.

This was after the 2021 edition of Pune Open was cancelled because of the pandemic.

Unseeded Jiri Vesely defeated the eighth-seeded Egor Gerasimov in the final to lift the title at the Pune Open in 2020. Vesely had earlier come through a thrilling, three tie-breakers against the second-seeded Berankis in the semifinal while Gerasimov defeated James Duckworth in the other last-four encounter.

Kevin Anderson went on to win the ATP Pune Open title in 2019, beating tall-serving Ivo Karlovic in three tie-breakers in the final. This was after he had sent out the defending champion and the third-seeded Gilles Simon in the semifinal.

Interestingly, Simon won the 2018 edition of the Pune Open by defeating Kevin Anderson in the final. He won 7-6, 6-2 to clinch the title after having entered the tournament as an unseeded player. Karlovic had overcome Steve Darcis in the other semifinal.

Some of the other seeded players to have made it to the quarterfinals in the competition were Malek Jaziri, Benoit Paire and Jaume Munar.
