Naomi Osaka v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

The 24-year-old Kazakh holds a 2-0 lead over former World No. 1, last defeating her in Birmingham a couple of weeks back. She knocked out the current US Open champion with 6-2, 6-3.

A Nervy Start for Osaka

Despite winning back to back Grand Slams at 21 years of age and becoming World No. 1, Naomi Osaka still has got a lot to conquer. Coincidentally at Wimbledon, she has the opportunity to do just that – overcome Putintseva and deliver a promising run on the grass courts.

She arrived in London with a win-loss tally of 22-7. She has only won the Australian Open title this season and as the year progressed, her form dwindled slightly. Osaka reached the quarterfinal in Madrid and Rome while in the French Open, she lost in the third round to Katerina Siniakova – a young Czech prodigy.

The Japanese then played in only one grass tournament and there, her performance was less than eventful.

Putintseva in With an Advantage

Yulia Putintseva has got a massive psychological advantage over Osaka in the form of a 2-0 lead. Even the best of the best have fumbled in these kinds of situations and Putintseva will not hesitate to take her chances.

Earlier this season, she won the Nurnberg Open and also had a decent run in the Miami Open where she reached the fourth round. Putintseva has never made it past the second round in Wimbledon and that is something that she will be keen to overcome, this time around.

Apart from these runs, the Kazakh never really had a discernible performance to woo the fans. In Sydney, she made it to the quarterfinal as a qualifier before falling to Kiki Bertens.

Osaka v Putintseva Predictions & Tips

Osaka isn’t really comfortable playing on grass, as she has previously mentioned and that gives a much-needed edge to Putintseva. Moreover, the unseeded Kazakh has defeated a few top 10 players like Sloane Stephens, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Dominika Cibulkova over the course of her career.

All signs indicate that this isn’t going to be an easy match for the Japanese. It will be interesting to see how the two players negotiate this tricky encounter.
