Maria Sharapova v Pauline Parmentier Woo Head to Head
The two have played never played each other before – this will be the first meeting between the two women currently ranked 80th and 82nd in the world.
Sharapova Injury Doubts Remain
Sharapova has played very little tennis in 2019, because of a lingering shoulder injury. After reaching the last 16 in Melbourne, where she was beaten by Ashleigh Barty, she was forced to withdraw before her second match at the St. Petersburg Open at the end of January.
She did not play a match in anger again before the Mallorca Open two weeks ago, where she recorded her first grass court win since 2015, beating Viktoria Kuzmova, before going down in straight sets to Angelique Kerber.
Winner of the title here in 2004 when she was just a seventeen year old, there is a feeling that she has never fully realised her potential at this tournament. Her prodigious talents suggest she should have won more titles at the All-England Club, but, in part due to injury, this has proven not to be the case.
Nevertheless, this match is a good opportunity to remind people of what she is capable of on a grass court.
Parmentier’s Terrible Record on Grass
Parmentier, at 33, one year older than Sharapova, has a very poor record at Wimbledon. She has only ever reached the second round here three times, and has been beaten first time out on the last six occasions that she has made the main draw.
Having won two WTA titles earlier in her professional life, Parmentier enjoyed something of a late career renaissance last year, winning two tournaments – the Istanbul Cup, and the Tournoi de Quebec in Canada.
Unfortunately for her, she has shown few traces of that form in 2019, with a quarter-final in Budapest the best that she has managed in terms of results.
Sharapova v Parmentier Predictions & Tips
Sharapova is the heavy odds-on favourite to win this match at 3/14, whilst Parmentier is priced at 15/4. If the Russian could have hand-picked an opponent to get her campaign off to a winning start, she would have been hard pressed to find anybody better to play than Parmentier. Presuming that there are no lasting effects from her shoulder injury, Sharapova should win easily.
