Kyle Edmund v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

Edmund and Verdasco have met twice on tour. The Spaniard won both matches in three sets (In Vienna in 2018 and Rome in 2019).

Edmund Feels No Pressure As He Carries British Hopes

In the absence of Andy Murray in singles competition, Kyle Edmund will need no reminding of pressure. He is asked to dwell on it almost daily as the British No.1. A mystyfing Monday which saw two of the highest seeded men players depart, Edmund was a breed of calm as he gave a full expression of his frustrations with an excellent 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over Rafael Nadal’s talented Mallorcan student Jaume Munar.

It has been a difficult year for Edmund in general and particularly the last two months in which he struggled with a nagging knee injury at the French Open before regrouping with a reasonable run to the last four at Eastbourne last week. It was Edmund’s first-ever grass-court semifinal of his career.

The encouraging signs from Edmund’s win over Munar were that he was unhampered by the knee injury which forced him to retire from his second round match at the French Open.

The man from Yorkshire made a baffling pre-tournament claim that he can cause a major surprise by winning the men’s singles title. In his previous six visits to the All England Club, he has never made past the third round and he had been in atrocious form in the first five months, dropping to his lowest ranking since January 2018.

Verdasco Seeking To Maintain 100% Record Against Brit

Fernando Verdasco, like Edmund, won his opening round match in straight sets by a similar scoreline. The 35-year-old has been one of the most consistent players on tour in the last 15 years. Since entering the Top 100 in March 2004, he has stayed there ever since. Despite having relatively low success against the top players in the game, Verdasco has often played his best to keep a decent ranking position.

The Spaniard has amassed seven ATP titles, over 500 match wins on the ATP tour with over 100 match wins in Grand Slam matches. Verdasco famously led Andy Murray by two sets in their epic Wimbledon quarterfinal in 2013 before losing in five sets. That still remains to be his career-best achievement at SW19, with the Spaniard losing in the first round in his previous three visits.

The left hander though ended his recent bad record in Wimbledon first round and he will now be seeking to send the 30th seed tumbling.

Edmund v Verdasco Predictions & Tips

Edmund’s compact game on grass might see him edge Verdasco in this one. Despite having a decent winning record in the series, Verdasco might succumb to Brit’s ability to attack the lines. Add to the the fact that Edmund will be relishing the opportunity of putting on a show for the British faithful, you would imagine Verdasco will not have it all his way.

Tip: Edmund to win: 4/7 (888Sport)
