Roger Federer v Jay Clarke Head to Head

20-year-old Jay Clarke will experience the highest point of his sporting career thus far when he comes up against Federer. The wild card British has made the most of his appearance with a spirited first round win. But, despite being motivated by that and playing at home, he will not have much in the bag to trouble Federer. Although Federer came out less sharp than usual against Harris in his opening round, he is expected to be more fluent as the tournament progresses and proceed to the third round with a straight sets win.

Federer Brushing Off Early Round One Scare

Eight-time champion Roger Federer made his 21st Wimbledon appearance and began his campaign against little known South African qualifier Lloyd Harris. What was predicted to be a rather one-sided affair for the Swiss did not quite start that way.

Federer looked sluggish and his movement seemed out of rhythm, and unable to penetrate the Harris serve. A loose Federer service game in the sixth game of the first set saw Harris break, and serve out the set 6-3, soon thereafter.

However, normal services resumed thereafter with Federer picking up his game and looking sublime in the next three sets for a 3-6,6-1,6-2,6-2 win. Federer later attributed his less than ideal first set to the court playing a little slower than he expected and him being unable to get going in the initial stages of the match.

Federer comes in at the back of winning a tenth Halle title and is looking for Grand Slam number 21 with a ninth Wimbledon trophy over the next two weeks.

Can Homeboy Clarke Leave an Impression

20-year-old British player Jay Clarke is playing his first ever Grand Slam after qualifying for the main section of the draw. Clarke is currently ranked a career high 158 and has won two ATP Challengers and four ITF Futures titles. He is also a member of the British Davis Cup team and has trained with Andy Murray over the course of 2018.

Clarke will be remembered for pairing up with fellow countryman Cameron Noorie in the doubles last year at Wimbledon, losing the fifth set in a classic encounter, 20-22.

After receiving a Wild Card to the main Wimbledon draw, the young British player was up against American Noah Rubin in the first round. Clarke lost the first set 4-6, but came back to win in four sets 4-6, 7-5,6-4,6-4 to record his first ever Grand Slam match victory.
