Kei Nishikori v Steve Johnson Head to Head

The two men have played four times before, and Nishikori has won on each occasion, including their most recent meeting at the Indian Wells Masters in 2016. Those victories include one on grass, in the quarter-final at Halle in 2014.

Nishikori Quietly Eased into Round Three

Amidst the chaos of all the seeds clustered around him going out of Wimbledon, Nishikori’s progress through to the third round has almost gone unnoticed. He began with a straight sets win over the Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro, and then overcame the challenge of Britain’s Cameron Norrie, and the patriotic home crowd, in similarly convincing fashion.

Whilst not a natural grass player, this will be the seventh time he has made this stage in Wimbledon at least, which is a measure of his consistency. And he reached the Quarter-Final last year, before succumbing to the eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

If he beats Johnson he will be on track to emulate that feat this year, and also to maintain his record in Grand Slams this year, having been a quarter-finalist in both Melbourne and Paris.

Johnson’s Best Tournament Performance of 2019

29-year old Johnson is enjoying his best run in any tournament this year – this is the first time at any singles event that he has won more than a single match.

His opening round match against the Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas was straightforward, the American winning in straight sets. However, his next encounter on Thursday with the number twenty-five seed, Alex de Minaur was anything but.

Johnson lost the first set to the Australian number one, before fighting back to take the next two. De Minaur levelled to take the match into a fifth set, when a single break of serve was enough to enable the American to close out the match.

Johnson does have two grass court titles on his CV, the Nottingham Open in 2013, and the Hall of Fame Tennis Championship in the USA last year, so he is not to be taken lightly.

Nishikori v Johnson Predictions & Tips

Nishikori is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 4/17, whilst Johnson is priced at 39/10. The American does have some previous history on grass, but has been in poor form this year. He is playing a man who has beaten him every time they have met, and who is a consistent performer when it comes to Grand Slam events. Nishikori has won all four of their previous meetings, and should make it a fifth on Saturday.

Tip: Nishikori to win in four sets: 11/4 (888Sport)
