Matteo Berrettini v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head
The two men have played each other once before, at the Rome Masters in May of this year, with Schwartzman winning in straight sets.
Berrettini in Maiden Grand Slam Territory
Berrettini has only ever won one match at Wimbledon prior to this year, and has only ever once before reached the third round of a Grand Slam event , the French Open last year. Yet if he can get through his match with Schwartzman, he faces the prospect of a quarter-final on one of the show courts against Roger Federer.
He had an early test in the first round against Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, who used to play for Britain, and had the home crowd on his side as a result. Bedene in fact took the first set, but Berrettini then fought back, and won easily in the end. His second round match against former Australian Open finalist, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus was a more routine affair, won in straight sets, to set up his third round tie with the Argentine.
Berrettini is a man in form, having reached four ATP finals in the past year, winning three of them. One of those victories came on grass in Stuttgart last month and, having proved to himself as much as anybody else that he can play on the surface, he will be hoping for further progress in South London.
Schwartzman, A Clay Court Specialist Excelling on Grass
Schwartman’s record at Wimbledon is equally as poor as Berretini’s – he had only ever won a single match here before this week.
Yet he has probably surprised even himself by getting to the third round. The Argentine clay court specialist began with a relatively tough match against the Australian Matthew Ebden, which he came through in four sets, after dropping the second. By contrast, he had an easier time of it in his second round match against the world number 130, Dominik Koepfer of Germany, winning in straight sets.
Unlike his opponent, he has previous experience of reaching the latter stages of Grand Slam events. He has been a quarter-finalist at both Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows, and reached the fourth round in Melbourne last year.
Berrettini v Schwartzman Predictions & Tips
Berrettini is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 3/10, whilst Schwartzman is priced at 31/10. The Argentine won their only previous meeting but that was on his favourite surface of clay. By contrast, Berrettini has won an event on grass only last month and, as his recent record shows, he is one of the form men on tour. He can be expected to reach his first Grand Slam fourth round tie.
