Roger Federer v Lucas Pouille Head to Head

The two players have only met once on the ATP tour, on the indoor hard courts at the Paris Masters in 2014, which Federer won in straight sets.

Federer Brushing Off Early Round One Scare

Eight Time Champion Roger Federer is playing his record 21st Wimbledon and has thus far played little known opponents in South African Lloyd Harris and 20-year-old British Jay Clarke.

What were predicted to be one-sided affairs have produced their close moments and Federer’s experience has helped him navigate through. Federer has not yet got into his groove and it is likely due to the slower than expected grass courts, the transition from clay to grass, and the unknown nature of his opponents.

Federer comes in at the back of winning a tenth Halle title and is looking for Grand Slam number 21 with a ninth Wimbledon trophy over the next two weeks. With a string of upsets at Wimbledon already, it is looking like another fight for the title between the Big Three (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic).

Roger Federer’s next opponent is Frenchman Lucas Pouille, and the Swiss will be looking for a dominant performance, setting himself up well for week two.

Pouille Looking To Make a Mark

25-year-old Frenchman Lucas Pouille was ranked number ten in the world after a promising 2016, where he was a quarter finalist at both Wimbledon and the US Open.

However, with injury layoffs, and a difficult 2018, his ranking fell outside the top 40 on the circuit. He has made a decent comeback this year, being an Australian Open semi-finalist and currently ranked number 26 in the world.

With oodles of natural talent, Pouille has a powerful forehand as good as any on the circuit. He is a good volleyer and looks to play an attacking game and keep the points shorter.

He has had a good first two rounds here at Wimbledon, with straight set wins against fellow countrymen Richard Gasquet and Gregor Barriere. He will be hoping to make a mark on the tour, given the promising game he possesses.

Roger Federer v Lucas Pouille Predictions & Tips

The match promises to be a good match-up with Pouille being an exciting player when in form. He has had a decent year with an Australian Open semi-final showing and two good wins here at Wimbledon already.

Federer has not played Pouille in a while, but they have been hitting partners and know each other’s games well. The Swiss will need to be in good form early on, to avoid any pressure from the Frenchman, who is a great momentum player.

A good match on the cards, but it is Roger Federer on Center Court at Wimbledon. One does not pick against him –  Federer to win in three sets.

Tip: Federer to win in straight sets: 10/11 (888Sport)
