Sam Querrey v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head
The two men have never played each other once before. This will be the first meeting between Querrey, currently 65 in the world, and Sandgren, 29 places below him in the rankings.
Querrey, Accomplished Wimbledon Performer
Querrey has a good record at Wimbledon which suits his serve-volley game. He reached the quarter-finals in 2016, and went one better the following year, progressing through to the semis, only to lose to Marin Cilic in four sets.
Yet the man who was runner-up in the Eastbourne International warm-up event two weeks ago may have thought his participation in this year’s championship might be short-lived when he was paired with the number 8 seed, Dominic Thiem in the first round. And that feeling grew even stronger when the Austrian, beaten finalist in Roland Garros and twice a winner already this year in Indian Wells and Barcelona, took the first set.
However, Querrey struck back to win the next two sets, and then closed out the fourth to love to cause one of the big first round upsets. Andriy Rublev of Russia was then beaten with a minimum of effort in the second, and then Querrey powered past the challenge of Australian John Millman in the third, serving no less than 27 aces.
Sandgren, Defying the Odds at A Grand Slam Again
Sandgren is best known as the player who, after years of relative obscurity on the Challenger circuit, made it all the way to the quarter-final stage in Melbourne last year.
In terms of Grand Slams though, that run was a complete outlier in terms of his record. He has only ever won one match at the US Open, and he has been knocked out at the first round stage in the last three years at Roland Garros.
His Wimbledon record was even worse prior to this year – he entered the main draw for the first time last year, but was beaten at the first time of asking. It is, therefore, something of a surprise to find him in the fourth round.
Yet he has earned his passage. Taken to four sets by Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama in the first round, he then had an epic battle in the second with the number twenty seed, Gilles Simon of France, with the match going to five sets, before Sandgren eventually prevailed 8 – 6 in the fifth.
That gave him a third round tie with another seed, Fabio Fognini of Italy, the winner in Monte-Carlo earlier this year. This time Sandgren was able to overcome the number 12 seed in straight sets,
Querrey v Sandgren Predictions & Tips
Querrey is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 2/9, whilst Sandgren is priced at 41/10. Whilst Sandgren has done very well to get this far, he is playing a man who has a very good record in this championship, on a surface that suits his game. Querrey is likely, at the end of the day, to have too much power for Sandgren and should win easily.
