David Goffin v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

As mentioned, this will be a 7th meeting between Goffin and Verdasco. Three of their matches have been on clay (Goffin leads 2-1) and the other three on hard courts (Verdasco leads 2-1).

The head-to-head is currently locked at 3-3, and this will be their first meeting on grass.

Goffin Came Through An Epic Against Medvedev

David Goffin avenged his to loss to Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open earlier this year, when he sent the 11th seeded Russian packing out of the Wimbledon Championships third round with a terrific five-set victory.

That result ensured the talented Belgian crossed into the second week of Wimbledon for the third time in his career, replicating his exploits in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Having missed the 2017 edition due to injury and suffering a shocking first round defeat last year to Matthew Ebden in the first round, Goffin has been a rejuvenated man on grass this year.

The 28-year-old dropped out of the world’s top-30 after the French Open (the first time he has been out of that bracket since 2014). But the former World No.7 is slowly rescuing his season with a fine campaign on grass. Goffin made the quarterfinals at the Libema Open a few weeks ago and then made a superb run to the final in Halle, besting the likes of Alexander Zverev and the in-form Matteo Berrettini before falling short against Roger Federer in the final.

It was the first time that the Belgian reached the final of an ATP tournament since the Nitto ATP Finals in 2017, and it was that result that took him back inside the top-30 (ranked No.23 ahead of Wimbledon).

Verdasco Has Not Lost His Touch

Fernando Verdasco, like Goffin, came through one five-setter en route to the fourth round. The Spanish lefty stunned a disbelieving crowd on Centre Court in the second round when he ousted British No.1 Kyle Edmund in five sets having trailed by two sets to love and a break in third.

Verdasco then proceeded to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas’ conqueror Thomas Fabbiano in the third round in straight sets to reach the Round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time in six years. That run puts the Spaniard in a really good position to cement his place in the Top 40, and even at the age of 35 he is still looking fit as ever.

In fact, due to his longevity, Verdasco has been able to a regular fixture at the biggest events on the Calendar. This will be his 65th Grand Slam participation in a row since making his debut at Wimbledon in 2003. He has not missed any of the four Majors since then. For somebody not named Roger Federer, that is a remarkable stat.

Goffin v Verdasco Predictions & Tips

Goffin and Verdasco are looking to claim bragging rights to edge their series. Verdasco has been mighty impressive in his run to the fourth round. A lot of people are trying to discredit his efforts in beating an injured Edmund, but in fairness he sensed an opportunity and he had only one job to do in his mind. Goffin is not known for his grass court prowess, but he is playing very well on this surface. The Belgian is the favorite, but Verdasco has been massively overpriced here and he could surprise.

Tip: Verdasco to win: 5/2 (888Sport)
