Roger Federer v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

The two players have never met on the ATP circuit, with this being their first ever meeting.

Federer Looking at Another Deep Wimbledon Run

20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer is in yet another second week of a Grand Slam, and yet another second week of Wimbledon. The Swiss second seed has looked sharper with every round, after dropping the first set in the opener against little known South African Lloyd Harris.

The Swiss continues to topple records during the grass court swing, winning his 102nd title at Halle, which was a record 10th Halle title for him. He has since then made a record 21st Wimbledon appearance, and with his third round win against Frenchman Lucas Pouille, become the first man to win 350 Grand Slam singles matches.

With a number of seeds having already fallen in the first week, Federer has stressed on the importance of not undermining any opponent. Although the quest for the Wimbledon title now looks increasingly like a three way run between the Swiss, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, the eight time champion will likely not look beyond his next opponent, Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini In Midst of Purple Patch on Grass

23 year old Italian Matteo Berrettini made his debut on the ATP circuit in 2017, and has since moved to a career high number 20 in the world, with three ATP titles as well.

The Italian has excelled in the grass court season, winning the ATP 250 at Stuttgart, followed by a semi-final showing at the ATP 500 at Halle the week after.

Berrettini began his Wimbledon campaign with confident victories against Slovenian Aljaz Bedene, followed by veteran Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis who was playing the last match of his career. In his third round encounter with Argentine Diego Schwartzman, Berrettini was down two sets to love and then made a brilliant comeback to win in a decider.

The Italian is in the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Roger Federer v Matteo Berrettini Predictions & Tips

Berrettini has had a solid grass court court run, as he has adapted very well to the grass, with a strong serve and willing to come in to the net. Although he is up against one of the greatest all time grass courters, he would like to believe that he is up for the test.

The match promises some exciting grass court tennis, but eventually Federer’s superior experience and finesse will prevail. Expect Federer to win in three sets and make yet another major quarter-final appearance.

Tip: Federer to win in three sets: 10/11 (888Sport)
