Serena Williams v Alison Riske Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the tour.

Riske, with Another Sensational Run

Alison Riske, who recently turned 29, had always been one of those players who spent their time in the top 100, but without making any significant impact on the WTA Tour. In her long and illustrious career, she has won only two singles titles – one of which came only in June this year.

Even in Grand Slams, her best showing came in the 2013 US Open when she reached the fourth round.

But now, she has not only turned the tide around in her career, but has potentially upset the top order on the tour. What makes this particularly interesting is not a lot of people saw it coming – Riske went without a win through the months of April and May on the circuit.

But then, it changed in a little-known ITF event in Surbiton, where she participated in a bid to prepare for the grass swing and ended up winning the title. After that, she participated in the Libema Open and won the tournament, defeating Kiki Bertens in the final.

Riske carried that momentum to London and went by her business as usual. She displayed a great of maturity and perseverance in the process and moved past some formidable players. Starting with Donna Vekic, she dispatched Ivana Jorovic, Belinda Bencic, and finally, World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty.

It was her win against Barty that truly put her in the spotlight as she now prepares to face the seven-time champion Serena Williams. Now, the big challenge for her will be to retain that form in the quarterfinal too.

Williams, Looking to Conquer Yet Another Record

Currently ranked at the No. 10 position, Serena Williams hasn’t been that active on the tour, courtesy of her injuries. With a handful tournaments, including the majors, the best she has managed is reaching the quarterfinal in the Australian Open.

Her last event before the Wimbledon was the French Open, where she fell to Sofia Kenin in the third round. Playing along side with Andy Murray in the mixed doubles in London, she has definitely been more than active on the courts and so far, has done really well.

With the sole exception of her second round match against Kaja Juvan, Williams sailed to the wins in straight sets. In the fourth round, she sent Carla Suarez Navarro home with a clinical 6-2, 6-2 win. This has also been among the better performances by Williams this season.

Serena is now three wins away from equaling Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

Williams v Riske Prediction & Tips

Ordinarily, Williams would be expected to win this match comfortably. However, given her trysts with injuries and the consequent drop in form, the bookmakers will not be that generous with the odds. Plus, she is facing an opponent who just won a title on grass and knocked out World No. 1 from the competition.

Riske has clearly got the experience to take on Williams head to head and give her a run for the money. All in all, this will be a fun game to follow where Riske may very well deliver yet another upset.

Tip: Three sets in the match. (888Sport)
