Simona Halep v Shuai Zhang Head to Head

Zhang leads Halep by 2-1 and has won their last two meetings on the tour. Both of those came in 2016, with the most recent one coming in the WTA Beijing.

Halep in a Good Form

When Simona Halep arrived in London, she was certainly among the favourites to win the competition but the odds were still slim. Over the course of the last week, however, she has dramatically shifted those odds in her favour.

Among the top seeds, she is the only one remaining the bracket along with Elina Svitolina. But that aside, she has been quite clinical throughout the competition and it is unlikely that it will change against Zhang.

Except for her match against Mihaela Buzarnescu, where she had to battle for three sets, Halep won all of her matches in straight sets. The Romanian dispatched Victoria Azarenka with absolute ease in the third round and followed it by ending Cori Gauff’s dream run in the fourth round.

Now, Halep is set to compete in her second consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal. However, since winning the French Open last season, she hasn’t made it past this stage in a major on the tour. To make it more interesting, she hasn’t won a title since the Canadian Open last year.

She came close on a couple of instances of course. Since that win, she reached three finals – two this season, and ended up losing unfortunately. Nonetheless, she always managed to stay in the top 10 with consistent performances.

Zhang, Posing a Significant Threat

As a doubles player, Zhang has done quite well. This season, she won the Australian Open doubles with Samantha Stosur and later reached the final in the women’s doubles in Miami with her.

On the singles circuit, however, things have been quite the contrary. She has lost in the early rounds in a lot of tournaments this year. In fact, her quarterfinal run in the Wimbledon has been her best performance this season, which alone speaks scores about her form.

But to give credit where it is due, Zhang has put on a remarkable display in London over the last week. Starting with the number 23 seed Caroline Garcia in the opening match, she moved on to knock out Yanina Wickmayer, and most impressively, Caroline Wozniacki. The 30-year-old Chinese achieved this feat without dropping a single set.

In the fourth round, she faced some resistance from Dayana Yastremska but managed to subdue the Ukrainian in three sets.

Halep v Zhang Prediction & Tips

Halep will begin this match as the odds-on favourite, but Zhang, given her performance in London so far, will try to make things tricky for the Romanian. However, Halep has a lot more experience performing at this stage in a tournament and personally, she will be highly determined to go the distance. We can expect her to wrap this match in three sets.

Tip: Halep to win. (888Sport)
