Johanna Konta v Barbora Strycova Head to Head

In their one and only encounter, Strycova won the match comfortably with 7-5, 7-6(5), in the 2017 WTA Tokyo.

Konta, in a Phenomenal Form

Following her impeccable performance on the clay courts this season, where she reached the final in Rabat and Rome, Konta has managed to retain that momentum beautifully and put it to good use in London.

Starting as the number 18 seed, she was as it is faced in a very tricky draw with Sloane Stephens and Petra Kvitova placed on the either side of her bracket. However, on the back of some exceptional tennis, determination, and the support from local crowd, she has achieved what many would have thought to be impossible.

After moving past the likes of Ana Bogdan and Katerina Siniakova in straight sets, Konta met Stephens in the third round and defeated her in three sets. In the next round, she met Kvitova and that is where she had to prove her worth.

Kvitova, in a remarkable form as it is, won the first set and looked prime to win the match. But Konta had different plans – she derailed the Czech’s ambitions as she moved on to win the remaining two sets with 6-2, 6-4.

This is her fourth quarterfinal appearance in the last two months, including the one in the French Open. Konta was a semifinalist here in 2017 and now, is certainly on track to repeat that feat again.

Strycova, Not a One-Time Wonder

Strycova is a phenomenal doubles player, currently ranked at the No. 3 position in the rankings. While she hasn’t been able to do that much on the singles circuit, all that has changed over the last week at the SW19.

Reaching the semifinal in Istanbul, Prague, and most recently, Birmingham, the 33-year-old Czech has delivered some interesting results on her way to the quarterfinal here. She has already knocked out three seeded players and Konta may very well be the fourth one.

In the opener, Strycova moved past Lesia Tsurenko and then defeated Laura Siegemund. In the third round, she marked one of the biggest wins of her career against the number 4 seed Kiki Bertens. That was a match of brilliant proportions, as Strycova dispatched the Dutch with 7-5, 6-1.

After that win, it was a fairly comfortable ride to quarters. In the fourth round, she met Elise Mertens and knocked her out in three sets. Interestingly, the only time Strycova reached the quarterfinal in a major was in Wimbledon and that happened back in 2014.

Konta v Strycova Prediction & Tips

I have a feeling that Konta will win this match in three sets. She has matured a lot since her winning runs over the last few weeks. Strycova, as phenomenal as she may be at the moment, will find it difficult to subdue an opponent who is so driven and has a tendency to perform well on the grass, in front of her home crowd.

Tip: Konta to win. (888Sport)
