Elina Svitolina v Simona Halep Head to Head

At 4-3, Svitolina holds a narrow lead over her Romanian adversary although, Halep is quickly catching up having won their last meeting. They met in the semifinal in Doha earlier this season, where the number 7 seed won in three sets.

Svitolina, Finally with Reasons to Cheer

The current WTA Finals champion started the year on an excellent note with semifinal showings in Doha, Dubai, and Indian Wells. As an Australian Open quarter-finalist, Svitolina was performing performing consistently and it was only a matter of time before she won a title.

However, things took a sharp turn in Indian Wells when she picked up a knee injury and was forced to take some time off the tour to recover. She went by several tournaments without winning her opening match, including those on the grass surface in Birmingham and Eastbourne.

This consequent loss of proved to be quite expensive for Svitolina and she could have very well slipped further in the rankings, had it not been for her performance in the Wimbledon.

She arrived in London with slim chances and a rather weak form. Placed in a bracket with the likes of Petra Martic, Karolina Pliskova, and Caroline Wozniacki, she was compelled to put up a dominating performance right from the beginning, and that she did with great style.

Taking things one match at a time, she won against the likes of Daria Gavrilova and Margarita Gasparyan, before running into some problems against Maria Sakkari. However, after fighting for three sets, the 2017 Canadian Open winner sailed into the fourth round.

After that, it was just a matter of overcoming Martic and Karolina Muchova, which she did without dropping a set. Throughout her time in London, Svitolina has done well to keep her unforced errors count on the downside and making the most of her first service.

Halep Closing in on her First Wimbledon Final

A semifinalist here back in 2014 and then consecutive quarterfinal appearances in 2016 and 2017, Halep has undoubtedly come a long way since starting her journey on the WTA Tour.

As for the present season, Halep started the year on a great note – just like Svitolina. The Romanian reached the final in Doha, a quarterfinal in Dubai, and the semifinal in Miami. It is important to note that amidst all of this, she was experimenting with her coaching to find a suitable hitting partner.

She found much more consistency and depth in her game after deciding to partner with Daniel Dobre. Halep eventually reached the final in Madrid and had consecutive quarterfinal feats in the French Open and WTA Eastbourne, each win bringing her closer to a title.

The moment, as it would seem, is finally here for the Cincinnati Open runner-up. Her performance at the SW19 has not only boosted her chances to break into the top five, but she is also closing in on her first major grass title.

Halep’s performance in London has been nothing short of incredible. She moved past the likes of Victoria Azarenka and the giant killer Cori Gauff easily. In the quarterfinal, she knocked out the Chinese ace Shuai Zhang to reach the semi – a feat she achieved without dropping a single set.

Halep v Svitolina Prediction & Tips

Not a lot of people would have predicted a Halep-Svitolina semifinal and yet, here we are. In their seven meetings so far, they have never played on the grass and given that none of them are clinical as such on the surface, this can very well go either way.

Unlike Halep, Svitolina has never made it past the fourth round in London but has certainly got the experience to back up her play on such a big stage. The two have been really outstanding in this tournament and it is difficult to predict who will come out on top. Halep will start as the odds-on favourite, simply because of her superior experience on the grass.

Tip: Three sets in the match.  (888Sport)
