Borna Coric v Salvatore Caruso Head to Head

The two players have only met once on the ATP tour, which was at the Rome Masters 1000 qualifying in 2015, which Coric won in three sets. Both players’ careers have evolved significantly since then, especially Coric.

Coric Looking At Stronger Second Half of the Season

22-year-old ‘Next Gen’ member Borna Coric had a breakthrough 2018, where he won the ATP 500 at Halle beating Roger Federer in the final, and made the Shanghai ATP 1000 Masters defeating him again in the semi-finals, before losing to Novak Djokovic in the finals.

Coric ended the year at an all-time career high of number 12 in the ATP rankings.

A round of 16 appearance at the Australian Open marked the beginning of 2019 for him. However, his performance has dipped since with injuries coupled with indifferent form. Coric withdrew from the Halle semi-finals against David Goffin with back issues, which also saw him pull out of Wimbledon. He is currently ranked 14th in the world.

Coric has a solid all-round game that is very well suited to the clay, with strong groundstrokes off both wings. He also has an underrated penetrating serve that has seen him through tricky situations.

Coric will have the support of his home fans this week and will be hoping he is as close to full fitness upon his return from injury.

Can Caruso Make an Impression on the Clay

Italian Salvatore Caruso has been on the ATP tour since the middle of the decade and is a natural clay courter with success at the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures level, winning five ITF Futures titles.

Caruso had his best performance in a major at this year’s French Open making the round of 32, where he lost to world number one Novak Djokovic. His French Open campaign saw him reach a career high of 124 in the ATP world rankings.

At the Croatia Open this week, he won two rounds of qualifiers and beat Next Gen contender Corentin Moutet, exhibiting strong baseline and clay court skills.

Borna Coric v Salvatore Caruso Predictions & Tips

Since their last meeting, Coric has evolved into a top 20 ATP player with some noteworthy success on all surfaces. Caruso has mostly been an ATP Challenger and ITF Futures player, with some appearances on the main circuit, most notably the third round French Open appearance this year.

As per their credentials, this should be a straight forward win for Coric, but he is recovering from injury after pulling out of Halle and Wimbledon, and it remains to be seen how well he has recovered.

If Coric is not close to 100%, Caruso does have the game to trouble him on the clay.

Expect Coric to win in three sets.

Tip: Coric to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
