Anastasija Sevastova v Irina Bara Head to Head

In their one and only encounter in the Moscow International last season, the Latvian defeated Bara in three sets.

Sevastova Survives a Massive Scare

Following a comfortable start in the opener against Varvara Flink, Sevastova met Dalila Jakupovic in the second round. The Slovenian proved to be a stern test for Sevastova, who had to stage a long comeback after losing the first set.

She won the match ultimately with 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 and also earned herself a rest day on Thursday. With her body fully recharged now, she will be expected to put up an equally commanding performance against Bara.

The Latvian has been rather mediocre this season, despite being in the earshot of a top-10 debut. Reaching the semifinal in the US Open last year has done the trick for her, but she is yet to better that feat. Up until now, the best Sevastova has done is reaching the semifinal in Mallorca.

To say the least, she hasn’t been that consistent this season and has had her share of losses that were rather surprising. A good showing here in Jurmala will not only reignite her confidence, but also give her a push for the US Open series.

Bara Finds her Groove

Currently ranked in the early 200s, Ibara Bara has spent most of her time this year on the ITF circuit, with not much to show for. In the handful of WTA events she did feature in, the 24-year-old Romanian lost mainly in the qualifier/opening rounds.

But in the Baltic Open 2019, things have been very different for her. With a run to the quarterfinal, she has assured herself of a good prize money and a massive boost in the rankings. Bara achieved this feat by moving past Margarita Gasparyan in the opener, who retired in the third set after trailing 4-0.

In the second round, Bara met a very determined Valentyna Ivakhnenko and she had to dismantle her 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-1. This is, without a doubt, her best run of the season.

Sevastova v Bara Prediction and Tips

While the Latvian will start as the favourite, at least on paper, there is no guarantee here that she will win. Bara is turning out to be the dark horse in Jurmala and Sevastova isn’t the most immune, in-form player to survive these kinds of situations easily. Given her form this season, there is a possibility that Bara may deliver the upset, but it won’t be easy. Expect a good match here.

Tip: Over 16.5 games in the match. (888Sport)
