Stephens, Seeking a Resurgence on Home Turf
Following what has been a very quiet season for the 26-year-old, Stephens will be more than looking forward to having a good run in the US Open series. Having won the title in Flushing Meadows back in 2017, she has gone on to scale new heights, including reaching the final in the WTA Finals last season.
But this year has been quite the opposite for Stephens. Her best showings include the semifinal run in Madrid and the quarterfinal feat in the French Open. Apart from that, she hasn’t been able to leave an impression on the circuit.
As for her last event, it was in Wimbledon where she lost in the third round to Johanna Konta in three sets.
However, that isn’t to say that Stephens cannot reignite that fighting spirit here in the United States. After all, this is the circuit where she gained prominence and emerged to the top as a tennis player. Plus, her very first title was the Citi Open itself, which she won back in 2015.
Peterson Looking for a Win
The 23-year-old Rebecca Peterson is currently World No. 70, admittedly for the performance she has had so far. With a win-loss tally of 17-16, it is hard to imagine her going the distance in Washington, especially with a formidable opponent like Stephens awaiting her in the first round.
Having spent most of the season incurring early-round defeats, the Swede hasn’t been able to build her form as much as she would have liked. Among her best feats are the quarterfinal runs in Rabat and Eastbourne.

Stephens will undoubtedly start here as the favourite to win. Given her form and everything, it will be a shock to see her succumb to Peterson, especially in front of her home crowd. Expect the American to wrap this up in straight sets.
