Daniil Medvedev v Bjorn Fratangelo Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before – this will be the first meeting between the world number ten, and the American ranked more than 100 places below him in the world.

Medvedev Back on His Favourite Surface

World number ten Medvedev is back on his favourite surface – no player on the senior ATP tour won more matches than him on hard courts in 2018.

This year he has built on that form by winning his 4th ATP career title in Sofia in February, whilst he also reached the final both in Brisbane and Barcelona. Allied to that have come semi-final appearances at the Queen’s Club and Monte Carlo, and he can be pleased with the progress that he has made in 2019 to date.

What is currently lacking on his CV is significant progress in a Grand Slam event. His fourth-round defeat to Novak Djokovic in Melbourne this year is the best he has managed at any of the majors, whilst he was beaten by David Goffin in the third round of Wimbledon, the last event prior to this tournament that he played.

With the US Open looming, he will be hoping to set the record straight at Flushing Meadows.

Fratangelo, American Wildcard Unused to The Spotlight

Currently ranked 124 in the world, Fratangelo plays predominantly on the ITF Futures and Challenger tours where he has achieved some modicum of success, winning 11 career titles, the most recent of which came in the Fairfield Challenger event on clay last October. He rarely qualifies for the major tournaments, so is relatively unknown to most tennis fans.

Probably his best result of 2019 to date came at Indian Wells where he battled through the qualifiers, and then defeated Elias Ymer of Sweden in the first round, before Novak Djokovic ended his challenge.

Arguably though he matched that performance in the first round here, surviving an epic battle with the Croat veteran Ivo Karlovic to earn his place in the second round. In an extraordinary match that lasted well over two hours but with one solitary break of serve, Karlovic saved match points in the second set before levelling the match in a tie-break that finished 16-14 in favour of the Croat.

The third set also went to a tie-break, but this time Fratangelo prevailed 7-5 to clinch the match.

Medvedev v Fratangelo Predictions & Tips

Medvedev is the odds on favourite to win this match at 2/7 whilst Fratangelo is priced at 10/3. The wildcard has done well to reach this stage but Medvedev loves playing on hard courts and should have too many weapons in his armoury for the American.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 4/7 (888Sport)
