Kyle Edmund v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, on the clay of Marrakech earlier this year, with Tsonga winning that encounter in straight sets.

Edmund, Sliding Down the Rankings

Edmund has had a disappointing year so far, with his progress hampered by injury and loss of form, and he continues to slide down the world rankings, although arguably his 2018 career high of 14 was distorted by his run to the semi-finals at Melbourne in January of that year.

This year, his best result on the senior tour came in the familiar surroundings of Eastbourne, where he reached the semi-finals, but he would have been disappointed to only get to the second round at Wimbledon in front of his home fans, the last event he played.

He has had some success already on American soil this year – he won the Challenger event in Indian Wells in March, but he will be hoping to find some form and consistency ahead of the two masters Events and US Open to come.

Still, his confidence will have been boosted by the ease with which he beat Luke Harris of South Africa in the second round here on Tuesday, winning in straight sets for the loss of just five games.

Tsonga, Conqueror of Khachanov

34-year-old Tsonga is currently ranked some 36 places below Edmund in the world, but that masks the fact that the Frenchman had to miss large chunks of the 2018 season because of injury, and has had to fight his way back this year.

His comeback has seen some measure of success – he won his 17th ATP career title as a wildcard entrant in Montpellier in February, and reached the semi-finals in both Brisbane and Marrakech.

His results had somewhat tailed off during the European clay and grass court seasons, but he reminded everybody of what he is capable of on Wednesday by knocking out the second seed Karen Khachanov of Russia in a three set match that lasted just under two hours. It was his first victory over a player in the top ten for nearly two years, and saw Tsonga serve 13 aces and win 80% of his points on first serve.

Edmund v Tsonga Predictions & Tips

Despite the fact that Edmund is the seed and the higher ranked player, Tsonga is actually the favourite to win this match at 4/6 whilst Edmund is priced at 16/11. These odds really reflect their current form – Edmund is still trying to find some consistency whilst Tsonga is turning the clock back and enjoying something of a late career renaissance.

Tip: Tsonga to win in two sets: 6/4 (888Sport)
