Stefanos Tsitsipas v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

The two players have never met on the ATP circuit and this will be their first meeting on the tour.

Tsitsipas Off to Confident Start on US Hard Courts

Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas was made to work hard on his return to the US hard courts against the American wild card Tommy Paul, eventually winning 6-3,7-5. The top seed was down 3-5 in the second set, but came back to win 7-5.

Tsitsipas has been in sensational form for the first half of the year, prior to a disappointing grass court swing which included a second round loss at the Queen’s Club ATP 500 and a first round loss at Wimbledon. Currently ranked number six in the world on the ATP circuit, he remains well on course for a first appearance at the year-end ATP Tour finals, exactly a year after he won the ATP Under 21 Tour Finals in Milan.

The Greek will be looking to return back to his winning ways with a deep run here in Washington D.C, ahead of the ATP Masters 1000s at Montreal and Cincinnati and the US Open, all of which are in August. With a strong serve, powerful groundstrokes on either wing, an elegant single handed backhand, and good court coverage, the top seed at the Citi Open, is one of the favorites for the title next weekend.

Aussie Thompson Looking to Capitalize On Positive Start

Australian Jordan Thompson has been on the ATP tour for almost five years and is currently ranked a career high number 44.

A gritty counterpuncher , Thompson has come back strong in 2019 after winning just one tour level match in all of 2018, that resulted in him competing on the ATP Challenger circuit.

Thompson appeared in his first ATP final on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch, beating Frances Tiafoe, Alex de Minaur and Richard Gasquet along the way and made the semi-finals the following week in Antalya, in what was a good grass court swing for the Australian. He also made the third round of the French Open, fourth round of the Miami Masters 1000 and the final eight at ATP 250 tournaments this year.

The Aussie began his campaign at the Citi Open defeating Jack Sock in straight sets, followed by a marathon against German Jan-Lennard Struff that may leave him a little low on energy.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Jordan Thompson Predictions & Tips

Tsitsipas is off to a confident start to the hard court season, and begins as a strong favorite. He will be looking to continue and return to the strong results prior Wimbledon.

Thompson has had a positive season thus far, but has looked good in his first two matches here in the capital. However, it remains to be seen how much energy is left in the tank after the physically demanding second round encounter.

If the Aussie has enough in the tank, he loves the grind and we could be in for a close match. Expect the fresher pair of legs assist the Greek to win in a hard-fought straight-set win.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in two sets: 10/11 (888Sport)
