Aryna Sabalenka v Donna Vekic Head to Head

Vekic holds a formidable 3-0 lead over Sabalenka although, all three of those wins came prior to 2018. They last met in the 2017 WTA Cincinnati where the Croat won in three sets.

Sabalenka, on a Roll

Aryna Sabalenka has looked pretty impressive in San Jose as she made it to her fourth semifinal of the season without any major difficulties. With a bye into the second round, she first dismantled Coco Vandeweghe and followed it with a straight-set win over Carla Suarez Navarro.

Against the Spaniard, the No. 2 seed found herself in a bit of trouble as she had to stage a comeback after losing the first set. Her first service game wasn’t on point either but with Navarro’s unforced errors and a little bit of skill, she managed to reach the semis.

Sabalenka’s season so far is dotted with such runs, with the most recent one coming in Strasbourg. She was also a quarterfinalist in Eastbourne – a feat she achieved after defeating Caroline Wozniacki.

With just Vekic standing in her way, World No. 10 looks primed to go the distance and possibly, achieve a single-digit ranking. Given the way she has played so far in her career, it is certainly a strong possibility.

Vekic, on a Clinical Run

Donna Vekic has made it to the semis without dropping a single set, as the 23-year-old looks to reach her third final of the season. On the last two occasions, she fell one win short of the trophy in the WTA St. Petersburg and Nottingham this year.

However, that may soon change in San Jose as she continues to march on without breaking a sweat. Starting with Misaki Doi in the first round, she charged on to defeat Victoria Azarenka and Kristie Ahn, much to their chagrin.

Of course, Vekic also benefitted from a fairly easier bracket with the early exit of Elise Mertens. The only thing she needs to keep in mind now is to not succumb to Sabalenka easily. She has had a decent season but has also had spells where she fell to a litany of lowly-ranked players like Kimberly Birell, Ons Jabeur, Yafan Wang, and Alison Riske.

Sabalenka v Vekic Prediction & Tips

This is a match that can very well go either way. Sabalenka will be keen on avoiding another defeat at the hands of Vekic while the Croat will be looking forward to adding another win to her tally. My gut feeling says Sabalenka will get this one in three sets.

Tip: Over 16.5 games in the match. (888Sport)
