Andy Murray will need to wait to win his first singles match on return after he went down in his first round match at the 2019 Winston-Salem Open to Tennys Sandgren.

The Briton, who had earlier featured at the Cincinnati Masters in what was his first ever singles match since having undergone a hip surgery earlier this year, fought hard against his American opponent but failed to convert it into a win. Sandgren won 7-6, 7-5.
Murray’s hip surgery came in January following his exit at the Australian Open and after having admitted he might have played his last singles match, he has done well to even return to the singles circuit. However, he would be itching to win his first singles match having lost to Richard Gasquet last week in the Cincinnati opener.
Meanwhile former British player Greg Rusedski has backed Murray to come back slowly but strongly. He said:
“I think he is smart enough and he knows the goal is to be ready for 2020. It gives a great message to be quite honest. I thought he got better in his match with Gasquet and for not having played a match in singles since the Australian Open.”
Murray had already opted out of the US Open and won’t be featuring in either singles or doubles of that competition. He had earlier announced he would be looking to now focus on singles alone after having resumed his career earlier this year with doubles but said the US Open wild-card announcements were too early for him to take a call.
He is now expected to feature in Challengers during the US Open and will later play a few of the tournaments in the Asian swing of things.
