The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 23 year old Russian, and the German, two years his senior.
Medvedev Out-lasted Spanish Veteran Lopez
Medvedev came through a late night thriller with Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez, sealing his victory in four sets on the Louis Armstrong Court, in a match that finished after midnight on Friday.
The match was a war of attrition, with both men producing a barrage of aces and winners, played in front of a crowd providing passionate support to the Spanish underdog, with Medvedev alienating them by incurring a code violation by snatching a towel from a ball boy, and then gesturing angrily at the spectators.
It was the Spaniard who took an early lead in the first set, but he squandered his advantage, and Medvedev took it on a tie-break. Lopez hit back, broke the Russian serve in the first game of the second set, and went on to level the match. The third set was again tightly contested, but Medvedev clinched it on a tie break, and, with the 37 year old’s legs starting to go, he went on to claim the match.
Fortunately for him there were no signs of the cramp that plagued him in his previous match with Hugo Dellien. He is now into the second week of New York for the first time, and has equalled his previous best at a Grand Slam, achieved in Melbourne this year. However, he has loftier ambitions than that now.

Koepfer, German Qualifier in Unknown Territory
World 113 Koepfer has enjoyed an amazing run to the fourth round, having battled through two rounds of qualifying even to make the main draw here for the first time. Indeed, it is only the second time that he has qualified for the finals of a Grand Slam in his career, having made the second round at Wimbledon earlier this year.
Having got that far though, he has seized the opportunity he has been given with both hands. He began with a four set victory over Jaume Munar of Spain, and followed that up with a highly impressive straight sets win over the big-serving American, Reilly Opelka, a man ranked some 74 places above him in the world.
The best was yet to come though in the third round as he dispatched the number 17 seed, Nicoloz Basilashvili, of Georgia, again in four sets, the first time in his career he has beaten a player in the top twenty. In doing so, he has earned himself the biggest payday of his career to date, and he will enter the world’s top 100 for the first time, ensuring more guaranteed tournament invitations.
Medvedev v Koepfer Predictions & Tips
Medvedev is the overwhelming odds-on favourite to win this match at 20/21, whilst Koepfer is a long shot at 23/5. The German has enjoyed a marvellous run to this stage of the competition, but against a man who is one of the best in the world on hard courts, it is difficult to envisage him winning.
