Roger Federer v Dominic Thiem Head to Head
The pair have played each other six times before. and Thiem leads their head to head series by four matches to two, including the two matches they have played this year, at Indian Wells in March, and on the clay of Madrid in May. However, Federer did win their match in the round-robin stage of this event last year.
Federer, an ATP Finals Record Holder
There were some people at the start of 2019 who thought that this could be Federer’s last year on the tour, but, despite being 38 years old, he continues to play at a very high level and he passed the career milestone of 100 titles in Dubai, adding three more to that haul in Miami, Halle and Basel.
He has not added to his total of 20 Grand Slams, but came very close at Wimbledon, where he got to the final only to lose to Novak Djokovic in an epic five set encounter.
And retirement appears a long way from his mind at the moment – he has already stated that he wants to play for Switzerland at next year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
Nobody has won more ATP World Tours Finals than Federer – his record of six is two better than his nearest challenger Djokovic, who has four. It may be too much to expect the oldest man in the field to add a seventh to his trophy cabinet, but, as he has proven this year, he should not be written off because of his age.

Thiem, a Year of Consolidation
26 year old Thiem has consolidated his status as a top five player this year, winning his first Masters title – in Indian Wells in March – and adding four more events to his CV: the tournaments in Barcelona, Kitzbuhel, Beijing and, most recently, Vienna.
And, for the second successive year, he made the final of the French Open. However, he lost again to his nemesis Raphael Nadal for the second successive year, but did have the consolation of taking a set off the Spaniard this time.
Long regarded as the potential successor to Nadal when it comes to establishing a domination on clay, the victory at Indian Wells gave evidence that he is beginning to develop more of an all-round game, especially as it was Federer himself that he beat in the final.

Despite Thiem’s superior head to head record, and that victory at Indian Wells, Federer is the odds-on favourite for this match at 5/18, whilst Thiem is 31/10. Those odds are not just based on sentiment, although Federer is a very popular figure with the London crowds. Instead it recognises the fact that, even at 38 years old, he remains a supreme competitor, and capable of raising his game for the big occasion such as this.
