Rafael Nadal v Alexander Zverev Head to Head
The pair have played each other five times before, and Nadal has won every time. Their last two meetings both came in 2018, with the Spaniard winning two matches on clay, in the Davis Cup and at the Rome Masters.
Nadal Seeking First Year-Ending Title
For all that he has achieved in the game, it is perhaps surprising that Nadal has yet to win this event. He will be looking to put that right in London, provided that he is fully recovered from the abdominal injury that caused him to retire from his semi-final at the Paris Masters a week ago during the warm-up.
However, winning the tournament is probably not his main priority this week. Instead he wants to get sufficiently far in the event to protect his world number one status from Novak Djokovic going into the winter break.
He has earned his ranking by winning two Grand Slams in 2019 – at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows – to bring him within one of Roger Federer’s all-time record of twenty, and by winning the Masters’ events in Rome and Montreal. He also made five semi-finals in the tournaments he entered.

Zverev is the defending champion in London, but a year after his greatest triumph on a tennis court, he has failed to largely build on that promise, due to a combination of loss of form, minor injuries, inconsistency, and, in the first part of the season, off-the-court problems.
As a result, his world ranking has suffered, and he has slipped from three at the start of the year to his current standing of seven. He has also lost his status as the “man most likely to win a Grand Slam title next” in favour of the emerging talent of Daniil Medvedev.
There have been some highlights – he won his 11th career title in Geneva, and made the finals in Acapulco and Shanghai, but there have been too few for his liking.
Nadal v Zverev Predictions & Tips
Nadal is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 8/15, whilst Zverev is priced at 7/4. The German has never beaten the Spaniard, and for him to do so this time, he will need to rediscover his form of a year ago. Given the unlikelihood of that happening overnight, provided that Nadal is sufficiently over his recent injury problem, he should win with comparative ease.
