Novak Djokovic v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

The pair have met nine times before, with Djokovic leading their head-to-head series by six matches to three. Thiem’s wins though have all come on clay – at Roland Garros in 2017 and again this year, and at Madrid in May. Djokovic has won all of their previous encounters on a hard court.

Djokovic, Dominant Win over Berrettini

The pre-tournament favourite Djokovic got off to a fine start in London on Sunday with an utterly convincing display against the 23-year old Italian Matteo Berrettini, who is making his debut at the ATP Finals this week.

Taking full advantage of Italian nerves, the Serb broke Berrettini’ serve twice in the first set and three times in the second, despite his opponent regularly serving at over 130 miles an hour. Meanwhile, he was barely troubled on his own serve, and made just 8 unforced errors in the entire match, which was over in 63 minutes.

Looking to equal Roger Federer’s record of sixth wins in this competition, Djokovic needs to get to the final here if he has any chance of overtaking Rafael Nadal to become the world number one going into the winter break, an accolade he has likened to winning a Grand Slam.

Thiem, Impressive Victory Against Federer

Thiem also began his campaign with an impressive victory, defeating Federer in straight sets on Sunday evening.

He began the match in fine style, breaking the Federer serve in the opening game, and, although the Swiss levelled the match three games later, Thiem always had the edge with his powerful hitting. He also benefitted from an opponent who allowed his levels to drop at crucial moments in the match, making unforced errors which the Austrian capitalised on ruthlessly.

A string of errors allowed Thiem to break at 5 – 5 in the first set, which he went on to take, and then, when Federer threatened to seize control of the second set, Thiem saved himself with a running forehand. Federer had to battle constantly to hold his serve and, eventually, lost the struggle in the eleventh game of the set. The 38-year old had two chances to break back in the next game, but missed them both, and Thiem sealed the victory in an hour and a half on his second match point.

Djokovic v Thiem Predictions & Tips

Djokovic is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 1/5, whilst Thiem is priced at 43/10. Whilst these odds seem very skewed given that Thiem has a comparatively good record against the Serb, he has only ever beaten him on clay. When it comes to hard courts Djokovic has always won in the past, and whilst Thiem is now a much better all court player than he was, it is asking a lot for him to claim a maiden victory on this surface against a man who is desperate to get to the final for a variety of reasons.
