Rafael Nadal v Daniil Medvedev Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and Nadal has won on each occasion. Both meetings came in high profile finals this year – at the Rogers Cup in July, and the US Open two months later.

Nadal, Well-Beaten by Zverev

Nadal’s hopes of winning his first ever title in London suffered a major setback on Monday evening when he was well beaten in straight sets by the defending champion Alexander Zverev. Whilst he appeared, outwardly at least, to shown no signs of the abdominal muscle injury which had forced him to retire from the Paris Masters, the Spaniard was definitely out of sorts, and could not cope with the intensity of his opponent, particularly when it came to serve, where the German was dominant.

Nadal had won all their previous meetings, but, on this occasion, as he later admitted, he was just not good enough.  He was broken in the fifth game of the fifth set, netting a routine forehand, and then proceeded to lose the next five games, as his touch and rhythm deserted him. In the end he failed to earn himself a single break point in the entire match, and was well-beaten at the end.

Wednesday’s match is now a must-win game for him if he wants to preserve his chances of ending the year as the world number one.

Medvedev Shocked by Tsitsipas

Like Nadal, Medvedev suffered a surprise defeat on Monday, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas for the first time. It was a bad time for his winning run against the Greek to come to an end.

With the relationship between the two men strained since a row over a net cord in Miami last year, this encounter was something of a grudge match, and was incredibly tight throughout. There were no breaks of serve in the first set, but, in the tie-break, Tsitsipas got his reward for being the more aggressive of the pair. At 6 -5 he earned a mini-break after a long rally, and duly converted it to take the set.

The second set followed a similar pattern but at four games all, Medvedev misjudged a return and left a ball that drifted in, giving Tsitsipas the chance to break, which he took. He then served out for the match, and celebrated in exuberant fashion.

Nadal v Zverev Predictions & Tips

Medvedev is the slight favourite to win this match at 10/11, whilst Nadal is priced at 11/10.  These odds reflect the continuing concerns over the Spaniard’s fitness, but, what should never be underestimated is his fighting spirit and will to win. He will be determined to prolong his stay in the event, and preserve his chances of retaining his world number one status, so, if his body permits, he will not go down without a fight.
