The 2019 edition of the WTA Mallorca Open will see Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber return to feature in the tournament.

The tournament, which is hosted at the Santa Ponsa Tennis Club and will be played a couple of weeks before the Wimbledon, is used by players as a preparation for the the third major of the year. Played on outdoor grass courts, the competition will be in its fourth season in 2019.

Last year Kerber was the second seed in Mallorca, behind Caroline Garcia, but lost in the round one of the competition, bowing out to the American qualifier Allison Riske. She went on to win the Wimbledon title just a month later though and would hope to be able to go deep into this tournament to be able to warm up to defend her title.

Kerber, who won the Germany’s Woman Sportsperson of the Year award following her win over Serena Williams at the Wimbledon final, said of her participation in Mallorca:

“The Mallorca Open with its great grass courts is the perfect preparation for Wimbledon. Players and spectators enjoy the tournament with a pleasant atmosphere.”

Kerber finished the year as the second-ranked player in the world following her third Grand Slam title win, having already clinched the Australian Open and US Open in 2016. Having had a poor 2017 season where she was dumped out of round one at the French Open and US Open and failed to make it past round four at the other tournaments, she came back strongly this year to finish the season on a high.

Unseeded Tatjana Maria went on to win the title last year with a straight set win over the third seeded Anastasija Sevastova last year, having earlier also defeated the fourth seeded Anett Kontaveit and seventh seeded Lucie Safarova in that competition.

The rest of the player list for the Mallorca Open will be released at a later date. You can get more information to buy your Mallorca Open tickets here.
