The Rolex Paris Masters is the final Masters tournament competition of the season and also called Bercy by the locals. What happened at the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters?
Novak Djokovic was on the verge of winning his seventh title at the Paris Masters in 2022 but it was a stunning performance from Holger Rune that stopped him right in his tracks.
Rune defeated Djokovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the final to clinch his first ever Masters 1000 title. This was after Rune was stretched to three sets in his first round match against Stan Wawrinka as well, who had three match points in that encounter.
The Dane also took the first set against Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal before his opponent retired due to injury before defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals.
None of Nadal, Ruud or Medvedev even made the quarterfinals in 2022 while Stefanos Tsitsipas entered the semifinal stage.
It was Novak Djokovic who won his sixth Paris Masters title when he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final. The match went the distance with Djokovic recovering from the loss of the first set to clinch the title.
This also became his 37th tournament win on the ATP Masters 1000 circuit, a record-breaking feat.
Djokovic had earlier needed a three-setter against Hubert Hurkacz in the semifinal while Medvedev registered a crushing win over Alexander Zverev in his semifinal match.
Daniil Medvedev hadn’t had the best of seasons in 2020 leading up to the 2020 Paris Masters, but he announced he was still around with a sterling performance at this competition, the last one before the ATP Finals.
Medvedev needed three sets and to overcome the loss of the first against Alexander Zverev in the final to lift the Paris Masters trophy. The third seed had earlier defeated Diego Schwartzman and Milos Raonic to make it to the title decider.
Zverev needed to defeat Rafael Nadal in the semifinal, after a victory in the quarterfinals against Stan Wawrinka.
Novak Djokovic won the 2019 edition of the Rolex Paris Masters by beating Denis Shapovalov in the final in straight sets. It was one of the most facile tournament wins for Djokovic who did not drop a single set en route the title.
His only real challenge in form of a quality, in-form opposition was Stefanos Tsitsipas and the then-world number one defeated him 6-1, 6-2 to move to the semifinals.
There were other wins over Grigor Dimitrov and Kyle Edmund too for Djokovic after he began the competition with a victory against Corentin Moutet in the second round.
Rafael Nadal made it to the semifinals too but had to withdraw from his match against Shapovalov because of injury, while Cristian Garin, Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were the other quarterfinalists in the tournament.
In the 2018 edition, Karen Khachanov starts off as the defending champion after winning the previous edition of the Rolex Paris Masters by beating Novak Djokovic in the final 7-5, 6-4. Djokovic, in course of making it to the final of the tournament, was re-crowned the world number one.
This Rolex Paris Masters win was Khachanov’s first ever victory in the Masters 1000 competitions, and he had to go through a circuitous path of facing – and saving – a couple of match-points in his previous round match against John Isner.
The match of the tournament came in the semi-final where Djokovic scraped past Roger Federer in a thrilling three-setter that saw the Serb win two tie-breakers including the final set. Khachanov brushed past Dominic Thiem in the other semi-final to set up the final.
The other losing quarterfinalists included Marin Cilic, Kei Nishikori, Alexander Zverev and Jack Sock.
Top seeded Nadal had earlier withdrawn from the tournament due to an abdominal injury, which allowed Djokovic to clinch the year-ending number one spot on the ATP rankings.
