What Happened in the 2022 WTA Eastbourne International?

14th-seeded Petra Kvitova found a way to clinch the 2022 WTA Eastbourne title as she disposed off defending champion Jelena Ostapenko in the final 6-3, 6-2.

Kvitova had earlier overcome Croat qualifier Donna Vekic in the second round following an opening bye and later defeated Britons Katie Boulter and Harriet Dart in back to back matches to reach the semifinals.

This was followed by a taming of the in-form Beatriz Haddad Maia in the semifinal.

Unseeded and wildcard entrant Jelena Ostapenko overcame Anett Kontaveit in the final to lift the 2021 WTA Eastbourne trophy. She won 6-3, 6-3.

Earlier, Kontaveit had strolled into the final following the retirement of Camilla Giorgi while Ostapenko brushed aside Elena Rybakina in another semifinal. None of the seeded players including the top seeded Aryna Sabalenka made it past the last eight stage.

The 2020 edition wasn’t held owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Second seeded Karolina Pliskova won the 2019 edition of the WTA Eastbourne by beating the fourth seeded Angelique Kerber in straight sets in the final. She won 6-1, 6-4. Pliskova had earlier crushed Kiki Bertens in the semifinals, and in all, dropped just 19 games across five matches to clinch the tournament win.

Kerber’s path to the final consisted of beating Simona Halep in the quarterfinals, before she got a walkover in the semifinals from Ons Jabeur. Fifth seeded Elina Svitolina and seventh seeded Sloane Stephens were both ousted in the second round.

In 2018, as usual, it was a star-studded field with Wozniacki, Pliskova, Kvitova, and Kerber leading the charge. They were joined by the likes of Goerges, Jelena Ostapenko, Konta, Bertens, Daria Kasatkina, Barty, among others.

It was one of the many events in the season that saw the top seeds actually perform and reach the penultimate rounds. The quarterfinals featured Pliskova, Sabalenka, Kerber, Wozniacki, and other major seeds. Among the upsets were Barty, Kvitova, and Sevastova.

Fans got a clearer picture in the semifinal when the herd thinned and surviving ultimately were the Dane, German, Agnieszka Radwanska, and Sabalenka. Wozniacki defeated Kerber in three sets at a time when the Danish No. 1 was in a great form. In the final, she dispatched the young Belarusian with 7-5, 7-6(5).
