What Happened at the 2020 WTA Shenzhen Open?

The first winner of the decade, Ekaterina Alexandrova won the WTA Shenzhen Open in the first week of the 2020 season.

The Russian’s maiden title came on defeating Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-4 barely giving her Kazakh opponent a chance to steal the match. Alexandrova’s journey to the title was a tough one as she drew doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova in the first round, who with her partner Barbora Krejcikova, won the doubles title in Shenzhen.

However, staying on top of the match, the world no.35 cleared the round to face Peng Shuai and subsequently China’s no.1 player Wang Qiang in the quarterfinals who she downed in a three-set match.

Alexandrova’s biggest test came in the semi-finals where she faced two-time Grand Slam champion and former world no.1 Garbine Muguruza but the 25-year-old showed no issues as she breezed past the Spaniard in a two-set match to claim her second finals spot in a month. The fifth seed won the title in just over an hour to propel her Australian Open preparations to new heights.

Defending champion Simona Halep did not participate in the competition and Aryna Sabalenka who started off as the top seed in the tournament, won the title beating Alison Riske in the final. She won 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 to continue the season in the same way she had ended the previous season.

In doing so, Sabalenka also defeated the fifth seeded Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinal, the only seeded player she played against all tournament. What’s interesting is none of the other seeded players made it past the second round including five of the seeded players who crashed out of the tournament in round one.
