The event is a part of the WTA Premier circuit and is played a few days after the Australian Open on indoor hard courts. Along with the Kremlin Cup, the two events are the sole WTA events which are played in Russia every season.
With 470 points up for grabs, the tournament is attended by some of the well-known players on the tennis circuit. Up until 2015, the tournament was played on ITF Women’s circuit, after which it was upgraded to the Premier status.
2021 WTA St. Petersburg Schedule & Dates
The 2021 edition of the WTA St. Petersburg Open will begin from Monday, March 15 with the qualifying rounds played a couple of days before the tournament main and the women’s singles final to be held on Sunday, March 21, 2020.

The information around the players taking part in the 2021 St. Petersburg Ladies’ Trophy was released in February.
The list of players for the 2021 WTA St. Petersburg Open consists of Elise Mertens, who starts off as the in-form top seed and she will be joined by Russians Ekaterina Alexandrova and Veronika Kudermetova. Two other Russians comprise of the seeded player list.

What Happened at the 2020 WTA St. Petersburg Open?
Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens made it two titles in a row when she overcame the eighth seeded Elena Rybakina in the final of the tournament to win the competition. Bertens was an easy 6-1, 6-3 winner.
This followed Rybakina’s three-set win over Maria Sakkari while Bertens defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova – who had earlier won the Shenzhen Open – in the semifinal. The top seeded Bencic had fallen to Sakkari in the last eight, while Kvitova withdrew from her quarterfinal against Rybakina.
Bertens had won the 2019 title at the WTA St. Petersburg by beating the eighth seeded Croatian Donna Vekic in the final in straight sets. This was after Bertens had sent Aryna Sabalenka out in the semifinals, while Vekic crushed wild-card entrant and surprise entrant Vera Zvonareva to make it to the title-decider.
Victoria Azarenka also had a wild-card for the event and while she won her opener easily, she went down to Petra Kvitova, the top seed, in straight sets in the second round. Vekic then shocked Kvitova in the quarterfinals.
Third seeded Daria Kasatkina also made it to the quarterfinals along with Ekaterina Alexandrova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
In the 2018 edition, Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic had entered the tournament as the defending champion and she made it to the final yet again where she lost to Petra Kvitová in straight sets, going down 6-1, 6-2. No other left-handed women’s player had won a singles title in Russia before Kvitova.
Caroline Wozniacki had gone into the tournament as the Australian Open winner and the top seed. After a first round bye, she crushed Anastasia Potapova 6-0, 6-1 but didn’t last against Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-final, losing in straight sets in the process.
Second seeded Jelena Ostapenko met with a similar fate as she raced off to a straight-set win against Vera Zvonareva in round two but Kvitova brushed her aside in straight sets.
