Kvitova Taken to Third Set by Giorgi

Returning to competitive tennis action after having last played at Wimbledon, Kvitova was involved in a three-set tussle with Camila Giorgi before she could make it through to the next stage.

Kvitova needed two hours and six minutes in what looked like it could turn out to be a difficult encounter for the former Grand Slam winner. However, in the final set, the seventh seeded player romped through to three breaks of serves and a bagel to clinch her third round place.

Where Kvitova scored over her opponent was her first serve percentages – 72% to 58% – and while she won only 43% of her second serves, the Czech did better than Giorgi there too.

This wins takes Kvitova to 18-5 on win-loss in hardcourt competitions now following her title win at the Miami Open and a quarterfinal appearance in Indian Wells. Can she take down Bencic in this one?

Bencic Stretched by Parks

Alycia Parks has had her moments of magic all season and she almost caused an upset in the second round of the competition in her second match against Bencic. It took Bencic to extricate herself out of a hole before she could come through in a hard-fought three-setter.

Bencic endured 14 aces from the Parks’ racquet and saved 11 of the 14 break-points against her before winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 41 minutes.

In fact, in the deciding set, Bencic was down a break and Parks had three break-points to make it 4-1. Bencic saved those, and then broke Parks when she led 4-3.

Soon after Bencic had three more chances to overcome the Parks serve which she missed in the 10th game but off the fourth, the Swiss number one converted it to clinch the win.

Things could get a lot tougher against Kvitova and Bencic will need to do a lot better here.
