It’s been a tournament to remember for Fokina who has already sent some of the top players packing from the competition.
Having kick-started the Canadian Masters campaign with a pumelling win over JJ Wolf in the first round, Fokina went on to upset the highly favourite Alexander Zverev in the second. He had gone into that encounter as a 13/5 outsider.
And in the quarterfinal, while Fokina faced one of his toughest matches of the season, he still managed to come through after a three hours and three minutes battle.
What was fascinating about his 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (4) win was his serve was broken more times than he managed to get past Ruud’s but he still found a way to come through. In fact, in the decider, Fokina was 0-2 down and soon enough Ruud had a chance to serve out the match at 5-4.
Fokina overcame that to win it in the tie-breaker and now has a very good chance of making it to only his second Masters 1000 semifinal.

McDonald Goes Past Raonic
Milos Raonic is in the twilight of his career, having come back from fitness woes to feature in what could be his last tennis season. And he had done well so far to have made the third round but McDonald ended his journey with an easy win.
In a match lasting an hour and 11 minutes, McDonald registered a 6-3, 6-3 victory over his Canadian opponent to march into the last eight stage of an ATP 1000 competition for the first time ever in his career.
McDonald saved both the break-points he faced but more vitally he overcame Raonic’s serve on three occasions to ease through to the win. And this victory followed stunning straight-set wins over Aslan Karatsev and Andrey Rublev.
This is the third time this season that McDonald has won three successive matches in a tournament. Can he make it four in four for the first time?
