Swiatek Edges Out Collins in Three

Top seed Iga Swiatek notched her 50th win of the season on Friday as she edged out Daniele Colins in a three-set quarterfinal in Montreal.

Swiatek, who had also needed three sets to beat Karolina Muchova in the round of 16 on Thursday, needed two hours and 23 minutes to beat the world no. 48, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 on Friday.

That win improved her season record to 50-7 as she reached a ninth semifinal of the season. A 15-time tour level champion, she will be looking to reach her 20th career final with a win on Saturday.

This year, she has featured in six finals, winning the titles in Qatar, Stuttgart, Roland Garros and Warsaw, while finishing runner-up in Dubai and Madrid. The latter two are the only WTA 1000 finals she reached this year and also the only ones that she has lost of the seven finals she has played over her career. She will be looking to reach an eighth WTA 1000 final on Saturday in Montreal.

She had started the tournament with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win over Karolina Pliskova in the second round and then had edged out Muchova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the third round.

On Friday, against Collins, Swiatek was off to a flying start, building a 5-1 lead thanks to a double break. Collins did get a break back but Swiatek ensured there were no more hiccups as she closed out the set.

She was off to a 0-2 start in the second set, but this time the American bounced back with two breaks to force the decider. Swiatek dominated the final set though. She did not allow Collins a single break point while she converted 2 of 2 to win the contest 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Swiatek, who came into the tournament as the Poland Open champion, has now extended her current win streak to 8 matches.

Pegula Ends Gauff’s Streak

Fourth seed Jessica Pegula ended Washington Open champion Coco Gauff’s six-match winning streak on Friday to reach the Canadian Open semifinals for the third consecutive year.

The American, world no. 3, is only the sixth player in the open era to have reached the semifinal of the WTA 1000 tournament in all her first three appearances.

Pegula is however yet to reach a final, having fallen in the final four stage the last two years. This year, Pegula started off with back-to-back straight set wins, knocking out Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 6-4 in the second round and Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-0 in the third round, but she was stretched to three sets by Gauff in the quarterfinal.

Both players had 8 break points in the match, with Pegula saving 5 and converting 5 to win the two hour and 24 minute contest 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.

A two-time winner on the tour, Pegula is 40-13 in 2023. She lost her only final of the season to Swiatek in Doha. On Saturday, she will aim to reach her second final of the season, which will also be her seventh of her career and a third at the WTA 1000 level.
