Karolina Pliskova v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Pliskova has won them both. Their recent meeting came at Dubai earlier this year and Pliskova had needed three sets to come through.

While Pliskova had had a good start to the season, her form has tapered away drastically. While at the time of writing she was ranked 25th in the world, that would change to 34th when the new rankings are released on Monday after Pliskova has struggled to win matches at the highest level.
In fact, since making it to the quarterfinal of the Rabat Open in April, Pliskova has won just three of them while losing 10 matches.
More recently, she did well to get to the second round of the US Open only to go down to Clara Burel despite starting out a 1/2 favourite (with bet365) in that encounter. That is symptomatic of the form that Pliskova has found herself in with the once-service-queen struggling to prevent her opponents from breaking her serve.

Kalinina Sent Packing in US Open Opener
Much like Pliskova, Kalinina’s form hasn’t been up to the scratch either. More so in recent times and she enters this tournament in San Diego having struggled through the entire portion of the North American hardcourt swing.
It started with back to back exits at the Washington Open and Canadian Open and while she won her openers at Cincinnati and Cleveland, things did not go too well after that for Kalinina.
At the former she was beaten by Ons Jabeur while she was forced to withdraw before her second round match at the latter.
Making matters worse for Kalinina was her first round defeat at the US Open where Sara Sorribes Tormo got the better of her as well.
What all of this means is that despite her opponent’s struggles, Kalinina will start off a second favourite at 13/10 (with bet365) to win this.
