David Goffin v Guido Andreozzi Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between these two players.
Loves Clay but Slow Start for Goffin
Former world number seven Goffin has now fallen to the 21st spot in the world and that is down to his poor showing this season so far. He has had a win-loss record of 8-8 and 6-7 when you discount Challenger competitions. A second round exit at the Indian Wells Masters and a fourth round loss in Miami have only exacerbated the situation for him.
Earlier he also exited from the Australian Open in round three, losing to Daniil Medvedev, which means he would be waiting for the clay court swing more than ever. And especially this competition in Monte-Carlo where he was a semi-finalist in 2017 and a quarter-finalist last year.
The good news for him is he’s playing an opponent who is ranked a few places below him at the 90th spot and shouldn’t have too many issues getting past him unless he really bottles it up.
Qualifier Andreozzi Has Had a Few Surprises
So no, Andreozzi hasn’t beaten any top players but given his low ranking of 90th – and even lower earlier – he sure has surprised a few. He began his year with a win over Matthew Ebden, beat Ilya Ivashka in Indian Wells, John Millman in Phoenix, Mikhail Kukushkin in Miami and Albert Ramos-Vinolas in Marrakech, which should act as a cautionary tale for Goffin.
The Argentine also required wins in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw of the competition here which included a victory over Ernests Gulbis, having never played in this tournament before this.
A look at his record suggests that Andreozzi loves his game on clay, with 42 of his 45 wins last year coming on that surface. Scratch that actually, he absolutely, from the bottom of his heart, adores the red dirt!
Goffin v Andreozzi Predictions & Tips
Despite Andreozzi’s obvious preference for clay and a string of reasonable results, it’s tough to see him challenge Goffin in this match. We expect a straight set win for the Belgian to start off his clay court swing.
Tip: Goffin to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Betfair)
