Daniil Medvedev v Radu Albot Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the two men.
Medvedev Equals Federer Record for the Year
Despite being primarily a hard court specialist – no man won more matches in 2018 on that surface on the senior ATP tour in 2018 – Medvedev seemed to take to Monte-Carlo like a duck to water in his first round match, easily disposing of Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-1, 6-1, an opponent who he might have expected to struggle against, in less than an hour.
That win brought him level with Roger Federer in terms of most wins this year, both men having claimed 18 victories apiece so far in 2019.
Key to success in his match with Sousa was his serve. He won 83% of his points on first serve, and will be looking to maintain that level of consistency against Albot. Incidentally, this is just the second instance of Medvedev making it to the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters, having got there last season but falling at that hurdle.
Also, statistically speaking, Medvedev had won just one of the 10 matches he’d played over the past two seasons on clay. Another win here should make him feel slightly more confident.
Albot, Moldovan History-Maker
World number 45 Albot has already carved out a piece of history for himself this year, with his maiden ATP tour win at Delray Beach making him the first Moldovan player ever to win an ATP singles title.
That came after a semi-final appearance in Montpellier, and he successfully battled through the qualifying competitions in Indian Wells and Miami to make the main draw in both events, reaching the third round in California, and the second in Florida.
Although not known either as a clay court player, he got his campaign in Monte-Carlo off to a confident start, beating Slovenia’s Aljaz Bendene in straight sets. Medvedev though is a step-up in class as an opponent.
Medvedev v Albot Predictions & Tips
Medvedev is the odds-on favourite for this match at 5/12, whilst Albot is priced at 28/13. Albot is having a good year, but so is Medvedev, and should have too much power and finesse for his unseeded opponent.
Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Unibet)
