Kei Nishikori v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head

The two men have played each other twice before, both times on hard courts, once in the Miami Masters in 2016, and earlier this year in Rotterdam. Nishikori won both matches, but their most recent encounter went to three sets.

Nishikori, Hoping to Re-discover Early Season Form

Nishikori started 2019 in fine form, winning in Brisbane to secure his first ATP title since 2016, and his 12th in all. He then got to the quarter-final in Melbourne, and the semis in Rotterdam.

Then his form seemed to desert him, as he was knocked out of his next two tournaments, in Dubai and Indian Wells, by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, despite being seemingly in control of both matches.

Things then got no better in Miami, where he lost to Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in the second round. He has not played for nearly a month, and hopefully he has used the break to re-set himself ahead of the rest of the European clay court season including here at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Herbert, Doubles Specialist with Singles Ability

Herbert is very much a doubles specialist; together with partner Nicolas Mahut they clinched the career Grand Slam of doubles when they won in Melbourne earlier this year.

However, the world number 49 also knows his way around a singles court, and has already one final to his name this year, losing to compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Montpellier.

His recent form on clay has not been memorable. He was beaten in the second round of the Challenger event in Sophia Antipolis in France, and suffered a similar fate in Marrakech last week. However, he did get a valuable win over Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the first round here on Tuesday.

Nishikori v Herbert Predictions & Tips

Nishikori is the clear odds-on favourite for this match at 3/14, whilst Herbert is priced at 74/17. Based on his all round game and their head to head record, Nishikori should have too much for Herbert, provided he has put his recent frailties on court behind him.

Tip: Nishikori to win in straight sets: 3/5 (888Sport)
