Novak Djokovic v Herbert Hurkacz Head to Head
The two players have never met on the ATP tour.
Djokovic Begins Quest for Second “Novak Slam”
The 2016 French Open won by Novak Djokovic marked him winning four consecutive Grand Slams and holding the ” Novak Slam”. Three years later, he is aiming to accomplish the same, and hold the ” Novak Slam” for the second time. What has transpired in the interim has seen his career reach unfathomable lows, followed by a resurgence like no other.
After winning the 2018 Wimbledon (his comeback slam) and the US Open, Djokovic ended the year as world number one.
2019 looked to continue along similar lines for the Serb, with a convincing Australian Open victory. However this was followed by a slight dip in form with early losses at the Sunshine Masters and on the clay in Monte Carlo.
Djokovic has since returned to form with 11 wins on clay out of 13, winning the Madrid Masters and being runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Rome.
The Serb begins the French Open as one of the favorites to win the trophy, with 11 time winner and world number two, Nadal, his biggest rival for the fortnight.
Hurkacz Hoping to Further His Breakthrough Year
22 year old Pole Herbert Hurkacz has had a breakthrough year, reaching a career high ranking of 41, currently ranked 43rd in the world.
Hurkacz began the year aiming to make a mark , being one of the many members of the ‘Next Gen’ ( next generation of tennis players). The highlight of his year has been defeating Kei Nishikori in Dubai, and again at Indian Wells, as well as defeating Dominic Thiem at the Miami Masters. Hurkacz qualified for the Indian Wells Masters 1000 quarter – finals losing to Roger Federer.
At 6’5″, Hurkacz has a big serve, backed by a solid game from the back of the court. With a powerful backhand, the Pole has the ability to hit through the best of players on the cirucit.
Hurkacz began his clay court season with a lot of promise but has since lost three consecutive matches and will be hoping to revive his form at Roland Garros.
Djokovic v Hurkacz Predictions & Tips
Hurkacz has had an impressive first half of 2019 with three top ten wins. With a big serve and a powerful game, he has the ability to challenge seasoned players on the tour. Whether he has the confidence and ability to push Novak Djokovic in the first round of a Grand Slam remains to be seen. Although he is an up and coming player in the midst of a breakthrough year, it is unlikely for him to cause too much trouble to the world number one in this encounter. Expect a clinical Djokovic performance, with a straight sets victory.
