Roger Federer returned to Roland Garros on Sunday after four years and looked his clinical self in his first round opener against Italian Lorenzo Sonego. Federer won in straight sets 6-2,6-4,6-4 in an hour and 43 minutes. The Swiss walked onto Roland Garros to a deafening applause and did not show any signs of nerves as he was up 4-0 in the first set in quick time with two breaks of serve, and then there was no looking back.
Federer missed the French Open in 2016 due to injury and decided to skip the clay court season in 2017 and 2018. The Swiss maestro stated his intention to return to the clay earlier this year and was content with his performance on the clay at the Madrid and Rome ATP Masters, heading to the French Open.
Although perhaps not his favorite surface, Federer is a 2009 French Open winner, and a five time finalist. With a relatively favorable draw, Federer will look to get through week 1 unscarred, leaving abundant energy in the tank for week 2.

Lucky Loser Otte’s Biggest Day of His Career
Lucky Loser German Oscar Otte has never been beyond the first round at a Grand Slam. Otte won an inspiring match against Malek Jaziri in his first round encounter here in Paris. The German has performed well on the Challenger and Futures tours, but is a newbie on the ATP professional circuit.
Otte attacked Jaziri from the back of the court- a ploy that is unlikely to work against Federer and the sort. Otte has a strong return game, evidence during his first round encounter and aided by his frequent participation in the double game.
The German was ranked around 121 late last year, but is currently about 145th in the ATP rankings.

The second round encounter is likely to be the biggest day of Otte’s career thus far. He played some inspiring tennis against Jaziri and will be hoping to do the same against Federer. However, the occasion and the opponent may both get the better of Otte. Despite what Otte is capable of, it seems unlikey that this match should be much trouble for Federer. Expect a comfortable straight-sets win for the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
