Denis Shapovalov v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head
Shapovalov and Struff will meet for the fourth time in their careers and third time in 2019. The German currently leads the series 2-1 with both victories coming on clay. Struff knocked out the Canadian at the first hurdle at the just-concluded French Open. This will be the second straight tournament they have been paired in the first round.
Canadian Given Worst Possible Start In Draw
If you had recently watched the 2019 French Open, you would have had lingering questions on why Denis Shapovalov was not playing. The bare facts are that the Canadian was ousted in the opening round to the big hitting German Jan-Lennard Struff.
Shapovalov’s task in Stuttgart does not get any easier this week as he will find Struff on the opposite side of the net. This will be their first grass court meeting and the 20-year-old will look to put the recent bad patch against Struff behind him.
Given the struggles that the young lefty had on clay this year (just two wins during the entire clay swing), it would not have been hard to fathom that the Canadian would fail at the second Grand Slam of the year. Apart from chasing some reprieve against Struff, Shapovalov is also looking for his maiden win in Stuttgart.
Change Of Surface, Same Old Struff?
Jan-Lennard Struff is enjoying a stunning 2019 season. The German will arrive in Stuttgart on the back of his career best achievement in a Grand Slam (reached fourth at French Open). His clay-court season was a memorable one particularly in Barcelona where he reached the quarterfinals (beat Stefanos Tsitsipas en route).
The German is a man getting accustomed to taking out big names in tournaments. He began the season by reaching the semifinals in Auckland and then reached the fourth round at Indian Wells where he beat World No.5 Alexander Zverev along the way.
Struff will now need to switch his attention and focus to the grass where he is yet to register any notable victories. The 29-year-old though should have no problems in transforming his power game from clay to grass. But while Struff is now playing some of his best tennis, he had the potential to be ranked much higher than what his current ranking suggests.
Shapovalov v Struff Predictions & Tips
Shapovalov’s clay court struggles should not be a barometer of where his game is at right now. After all, the Canadian’s aggressive hitting is usually suited to faster hard courts or grass. The 20-year-old is also a former Wimbledon juniors champion which also tells you he is a different kettle of fish on the surface. This will be closely contested match yet again between these two and expect the lefty to attain his retribution.
Tip: Over 2.5 sets in the match: 11/8 (888Sport)
