Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Milos Raonic Head to Head
The two men have played each other four times before, with Raonic leading their head-to-head series by four matches to two, including victory in their last four matches. However, Tsonga did win their only previous encounter on grass, back in the London Olympics of 2012.
Tsonga, Mercedes Cup debutant
The world number 79 now, Tsonga is making his Mercedes Cup debut, and got his tournament off to an impressive start on Monday. Playing Mischa, the older brother of the number one seed here, Alexander Zverev, and playing his first match on grass for two years, he won in straight sets in less than an hour, taking nine games in a row after the pair were locked at three games all in the first set. He was dominant on serve, producing 13 aces, and dropping just 4 points on his own serve all match.
The win took him to 18 – 9 for the season, the highlight of which was his 17th ATP senior title in Montpellier, and semi-finals in Brisbane and Marrakech.
Raonic, Survived Tough First Round Battle
World number 18 Raonic was runner-up in this tournament last year, when he got to the final only to be beaten by Roger Federer. With Federer not contesting the event this year, he will be hoping to go one better this time round, but he had a real struggle to get past Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin in his first round match. He lost the first set on a tie break, and had to come through another tie-break to win the match in the third.
In the end, the 2016 beaten Wimbledon finalist won the match, which lasted 2 hours and 12 minutes, primarily due to his serve. He produced no fewer than 31 aces, and won 47 out of 50 first serve points.
Tsonga v Raonic Predictions & Tips
This is a very hard match to predict, at least as far as the bookmakers are concerned. Tsonga, despite being the lower ranked player is the marginal favourite at 10/11, whilst Raonic is priced at 11/10. This is likely to be a very hard fought match which could go to three sets and tie-breaks, and the winner will be whoever serves best on the day.
Tip: Raonic to win in three sets: 6/4 (888Sport)
