Alexander Zverev v Dustin Brown Head to Head

The two men have played each other once before, back in the Challenger event in Mons, Belgium, in 2014. Zverev won that encounter in straight sets.

Zverev, Recovering from Early Season Woes

Zeverev will not want to look back on the first part of this season with any fondness.

Having reached the final in Acapulco, he then failed to win more than a single match at any of his next tournaments until he finally snapped that sequence by reaching the quarter-finals in Madrid. He was beaten in the first round in Rome, but his win in Geneva, gave him a first title of the year, and his 11th as a senior professional.

He then got to the quarter-final at Roland Garros, before losing easily to Novak Djokovic, but, playing in front of his home fans here in Stuttgart, he will be confident of going far in this tournament.

At the same time, he will be aware that comments made by a fellow German, Boris Becker, were partly directed at him. Becker, lamenting the fact that the Grand Slams continue to be dominated by the “Big Three” of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer, called on the under-28s, like Zverev, to start to “step-up” when it comes to the majors.

Brown, Capable of Upsets on Grass

Brown, currently ranked as low as 168 in the world, is a distinctive figure on court because of his Rastafarian hairstyle, and flamboyant style of play, and he is capable of some big upsets on grass, as Rafael Nadal knows to his cost. He holds a two-love winning sequence over the Spaniard, having beaten him at Halle in 2014, and again at Wimbledon a year later.

He principally competes on the ATP Challenger tour, where he has won 24 singles and doubles titles, and only entered the main draw here after getting through the qualifying tournament, where he beat Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan and Gregoire Barrere of France, both ranked him than him in the world.

He then showed what he is capable of on a grass court by upsetting John Millman of Australia, the world number 56, in straight sets to set up the meeting with Zverev.

Zverev v Brown Predictions & Tips

Zverev is odds-on favourite for this match at 5/8, whilst Brown is priced at 16/5. Brown can be a dangerous opponent on a grass court as his record shows, but he tends to be a streaky player and inconsistent. Zeverev should be able to deal with his challenge easily enough if he is anywhere near his best form.
